Distractions

Great grandma was seated in the puja room and rolling over her rosary beads. Her mind was deep into the mental chanting of the divine’s name. She often finds solace in doing this and has almost shut herself from the outside world. Suddenly she was disturbed by an angry out burst. She could hear it despite her hearing problems. It was her grandson’s wife. She was chiding her daughter “You are always into facebook, twitter or mobile. The world is competitive and you are not studying properly”. Grandma paused her chanting and her mind raced back to the days when she could play pallanguzhi and other games in fresh air. There were no compulsions or major expectations but there were different problems.. It slowly started with radio, cinemas and then TV. Scientific discoveries had their uses but became distractions and time wasters when not used with moderation. She was also puzzled by her son and daughter in laws addiction to TV serials. During her occasional visit to the temple she could see lot of young people with a device attached to their ears. She thought “My god why have so many people gone deaf?” Her grandson suddenly became angry and asked “where is my tablet? How could it vanish in thin air”? Again she was confused and asked herself “Tablets are prescribed by doctors. What is my pet one talking about?” She then realized and resumed to roll the rosary beads.
